On April 21, 2016, as a biennial open-source event, a press conference entitled "Be an operating system thought the most of the needs of Chinese users - Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 Officially Released" is held in Park Plaza Beijing Science Park. At the same time, Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 Release Series which is given by Ubuntu Kylin community and Open Source China will open its season in dozens of cities around the country.  

Ubuntu Kylin open source operating system(OS) which co-developed by National University of Defense Technology(NUDT), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Software and Integrated Circuit Promotion Center(CSIP) and Canonical has received extensive participation and enthusiastic support from developers of domestic and foreign community and fans since the April 2013 release of the first version. Ubuntu Kylin 16.04, the latest LTS(five-year support cycle) version is officially released which not only succeeds to the properties of Ubuntu, which are open source, security and latest applications, but also enhances the characteristics of desktop experience, Chinese support, other key applications and the first support of the international mainstream ARM64 architecture.

Guangnan Ni, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, makes a speech in the meeting. He hopes more and more domestic users gradually changes their roles from users of open source software to participants, contributors and leaders of that. What’s more, domestic OS, innovating on the basis of open source software, should be eager to seize the opportunity and integrate resources for the development of China's own intelligent terminal OS .

Jack Yu, a Doctor From NUDT and the project leader of Ubuntu Kylin, introduces the features brought by 16.04 LTS which provides a brand new and easy user experience. First of all, 16.04 adopts Linux kernel V4.4 to enhance the security and the compatibility with various types of hardware. And then, it provides an intimate wizard so that first-time users can quickly get started. Besides, 16.04 adds UKUI desktop environment to offer a different user experience. Furthermore, the new-developed Web Weixin Client helps user maintain the contact with friends even when you are using Ubuntu kylin. In addition, the improved Dash phonetic search greatly enhances the Dash user experience at the touch screen and allows a more convenient and smooth operations. Meanwhile, Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 also upgrades Ubuntu Kylin Software Center, Youker Assistant, Sogou pinyin and other feature applications. Dr.Yu also mentioned the support of the Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 ARM64 instruction set and Ubuntu Kylin Makerspace which has been built in the Binhai New District, Tianjin. Later, the Makersapce will work with Linaro, an international organizations, to create a "open source software + hardware" mode.

Mr. Lu Shouqun, honorary president of COPU, Lu Shan, a director of CSIP and Mr. Zhou Xinhua, software manager of Linaro have made statements at the press conference. In the meanwhile, the distinguished guests attending the scene contain Dr.Wu Qingbo, the director of Basic Software Engineering Center, School of Computer Science, NUDT, Mr. Qi Guangyu, manager of Canonical China, Mr. Zhang Zhi, chairman of Co-Software Union, Mr. Liu Peng, Secretary General of COPU and Ms. Chen Yang, the open-source community director and senior manager of Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc. Besides, Laptop and ARM64 desktop computer equipped with Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 are demonstrated on the spot.
